Looking for the perfect show? Red Mountain Theatre is bringing the magic with their latest production of the hit musical “The Wiz,” running February 6–March 1.

Whether you’re a fan of powerful storytelling, unforgettable music or dazzling choreography, “The Wiz” is a heartfelt, high-energy and soulful production you won’t want to miss.

Read on for all the details on a magical journey in Oz.

A story of strength, friendship + finding your way home

A vibrant reimagining of The Wizard of Oz, “The Wiz” is rooted in R&B, gospel and soul, and told through the lens of Black culture, joy and community. The story follows Dorothy, a young woman searching for where she belongs, who is suddenly swept away to the dazzling land of Oz.

Lost in an unfamiliar world, Dorothy sets off to find the mysterious Wiz—the one person said to have the power to help her get home. As she follows the Yellow Brick Road, she meets three unforgettable friends.

Together, they face challenges that test their fears, friendships and self-belief, only to discover that what they’ve been searching for may have been inside them all along.

At its heart, “The Wiz” is about empowerment, identity and community, and this production leans fully into that spirit!

“It’s an honor to work on a project that celebrates Black culture and reflects the contributions of the artists who came before us,” Monet shared. “Regional theatre lets us tell stories that connect directly to the communities we’re part of — and there’s something powerful about bringing this story to the South.”

Meet Dorothy, the Scarecrow + the heart of Oz

At the center of it all is Dorothy, played by Kaléa Leverette, who is making her Red Mountain Theatre debut.

Kaléa, a military child who grew up moving around the world, says Dorothy’s journey hits close to home.

“I connect so deeply to Dorothy’s search for belonging. She finds home in the people she meets and in herself—and that mirrors my own life. I’m excited to bring my personal story into this role and celebrate that sense of community on stage.”

Audiences will also meet The Scarecrow, played by Shawn Smith, who sees the show as a celebration of joy and identity.

“This production is about radical Blackness and Black joy. Bringing that expression back to the South feels full-circle, especially in a story so many of us grew up with.”

Expect big vocals, bold costumes, high-energy dance numbers and iconic songs like “Ease on Down the Road” and “Home.” This is Oz like you’ve never seen it before—electric, joyful and full of heart.
