Since we’re midway through winter illness season, this may have already happened in your household. You just picked up the kids from school and everyone’s sitting down to dinner, when you notice one of them seems a bit puny and looks a little flushed.

A quick temperature check confirms what you suspected: a troubling fever. Your pediatrician’s office is closed, so do you go to the ER?

Alabama parents have a simple solution to what can be a tough call, thanks to a pediatric urgent care network for kids founded by parents right here in Birmingham, Urgent Care for Children.

Read on for more about how this network meets the need and where to find them.

By parents, for parents

When kids return to school each January, parents resume their juggling routines of work commitments, pickups, drop-offs, sports and sleepovers. This is also when common winter illnesses tend show up at the most inconvenient times, like the ultimate unwelcomed guests they are.

UC4C launched in 2017 to give parents a place to go when their kids need quick care and their primary providers’ offices are closed.

Now the only pediatrics-specific chain of urgent care in Alabama, UC4C serves kids from birth through age 21 across Birmingham and throughout Alabama.

Smart middle ground

The clinics address an important issue of oversaturated ER departments, diverting children who are sick (but stable) into a specialized, pediatric-focused setting, according to UC4C Co-Founder Dr. Allury Arora Lal, MD.

Also a parent to twins, Lal knows firsthand how illnesses rarely wait for business hours, with symptoms often worsening at night.

“Parents don’t want to wait until morning when their child is struggling to breathe or has a 104-degree fever. UC4C gives families a safe, appropriate place to go when symptoms escalate. We are protecting children during the most vulnerable hours of viral illness. During flu and COVID peaks, after-hours pediatric care isn’t a convenience. It is a safety net for the entire community.”

🤧 Flu, RSV, COVID + strep
🤒 Ear infections, fevers + dehydration
🥴 Asthma flare-ups + allergies
😕 Minor injuries + sports-related issues

An in-house pharmacy at many locations allows families to leave with medication in hand, while prescriptions can still be sent out when needed. Online check-ins reduce time in waiting rooms.

With convenient locations within thriving retail areas, parents can tack on a quick stop or two if they’re up for it. For example, a visit to the Trussville location could also mean a to-go order of soothing soup from The Three Eared Rabbit or a scoop from Bendy’s Cookies & Cream, just the thing for when the fever drops.

You can find hours for each location, online check-in and more details on the UC4C website + bookmark them now, just in case.
