Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila to close at the end of January

After a six-year run, Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila—the upscale Mexican tapas restaurant in Mountain Brook’s Lane Parke village—is closing its doors for good.
Owners Jorge and Aimee Castro shared the news on social media, stating:
After so many unforgettable years, we’re closing this chapter of Sol y Luna with full hearts
When our brother Guillermo opened the original Lakeview location in 1998, Birmingham’s food scene looked very different. It was a time when even finding fresh cilantro wasn’t easy—and bringing bold, authentic flavors to the table felt like a risk. What started as a leap of faith became a labor of love rooted in family, culture, and community.
In 2013, we closed the Lakeview doors in search of the right next home. In 2020, we proudly reopened at Lane Parke (at the start of COVID) and continued sharing what we love most—food, connection, and celebration.
Watching Birmingham’s restaurant scene grow and evolve over the last 27 years has been an incredible gift. We’re deeply proud to have been part of the early days and to have helped shape the path for what came next.
We are endlessly grateful for every guest, every regular, every staff member, and every beautiful experience that filled this space with life.
Our last night will be Saturday, January 31st
Come see us, share a toast, and help us close this chapter with love.
Thank you, always.
Founded by Guillermo Castro and Daniel Rubio in 1997 in Birmingham’s Lakeview district, Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila is known for its elevated Mexican cuisine, utilizing unique ingredients sourced from both local Mexican providers and from family connections in Mexico and California. Family-style tapas like Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila’s chicken chillaquilles, fried duck empanadas and crabmeat enchiladas were fan-favorites.

After Guillermo’s passing in 2011, Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila’s ownership transferred to Jorge Castro and his wife, Aimee. Although the original restaurant closed in 2013, Jorge and Aimee reopened a new Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila in 2020—featuring the same beloved menu that many had missed for so long.
“The re-opening of Sol Y Luna makes me so proud. It was the first restaurant my brother, Guillermo, opened in Birmingham and it was such a beautiful and unique culinary experience. When we closed Sol Y Luna, it left a void for so many people – me included. We are happy to say that we are giving our customers what they have asked for… Sol y Luna is coming back.”
Jorge Castro, in a statement in 2020 regarding the re-opening of Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila
Sol y Luna Tapas & Tequila will remain open during normal hours until its closing day on Saturday, January 31.
