The Social Commons

The venue is located in the Social Commons Development, which is also home to Magic City ToolBank, Build UP and other locally-owned businesses.

A total of $100,000 from Birmingham City Councilor Crystal Smitherman’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding went toward the Social Commons with the goal to “anchor the community and serve as a gathering place for years to come,” the city council posted on Facebook.

“After Leonard’s restaurant closed, District 6 was left with a void and need for an event space. Now, that void has been fulfilled, because of the Grove. The Grove is a powerful example of what happens when we intentionally create space for community to grow.

“Having an event venue like this in District 6 is important because it provides residents, organizations and small businesses with a welcoming place to gather, celebrate and connect — right in their own neighborhood. Community spaces like The Grove help strengthen relationships, spark creativity and serve as anchors for positive activity and engagement.”

Build UP is a nonprofit high school and workforce development program which aims to turn young people into eventual home and landowners.

The Magic City ToolBank is a program of Birmingham United Neighborhoods (BUN), a coalition of eight neighborhoods working with the UAB Center for the Study of Community Health. The tool bank provides tools, equipment and expertise to empower locals’ goals by providing a low-cost alternative to purchasing, storing and maintaining tools.
