A lot goes into what you look for during a job search: the workplace environment, the people…you name it. Right now, at the beginning of the year, a lot of you might be in search of a new job somewhere in Birmingham.

Back in November of 2025, we passed along some job search dos and don’ts we got from local experts (check out that advice here!) And now, you can put these tips and tricks to work. We found a local nonprofit that’s hiring—here’s why you should consider applying!

Find a great job in Birmingham with even better people! (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

You might know United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) as a leading fundraiser for local nonprofits—last year alone, they raised $38M in 2025 for hundreds of Central Alabama nonprofits and programs—but you might not know that UWCA is a nonprofit in itself, and everything they do to give back to Birmingham organizations starts internally.

To learn a little more, I sat down with Shakeitha Tatum, currently the Vice President of Agency Relations, and someone who’s been involved in seemingly every aspect of UWCA.

If you don’t believe me, here’s her career trajectory over the past 12 years at UWCA:

  • Priority Veteran Case Manager
  • Family Stability Case Manager
  • Director of the 2-1-1 Call Center
  • Director of Allocations and Grants
  • Vice President of Agency Relations

Every person I’ve met at UWCA is also heavily involved in the community.

Tatum is no exception, being a part of:

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
  • Junior League of Birmingham
  • Kiwanis Club of Vulcan

“I am very much a servant leader and love serving the community. Then, I get to turn around and work with people who give their money, time and effort. It makes it so easy for me to do my job.”

It’s safe to say Tatum knows a thing or two about United Way, its programs and Birmingham, which made her the perfect person to share all the good things that go on at this company and its role in local communities.

Work at United Way of Central Alabama means giving back

At the heart of UWCA’s mission is people, which drives everything they do, starting with its core values:

  • Put people first
  • Serve the community
  • Do the right thing
  • Be collaborative

This translates well into the work they do for its partner agencies across Central Alabama, like:

The start of a new year inspires fresh ideas, a change of pace and a new look. This is why this time of year is so popular in the job market. While this market can be tough, there are still tons of great opportunities!

And know that whether you’re interested in finance, tech, senior adult services, early childhood education or many other things, United Way of Central Alabama has a place for you.

“United Way leads by example. I love that we always put each other first, recognize staff members and show our values internally.

The culture matches the mission.”

Shakeitha Tatum, Vice President of Agency Relations, United Way of Central Alabama

If you’re not looking for a job right now, you can still volunteer with UWCA and give your time to local initiatives.
