Mardi Gras is just around the corner! Whether you’re a New Orleans native looking for a taste of home or a Birmingham local eager to get in on this tasty tradition, we’ve got you covered. 

From traditional recipes to some fun twists on a classic, keep reading to find out where to get your hands on the best king cakes in the Magic City and laissez les bon temps rouler!

1. Edgar’s Bakery

With several locations in the Birmingham area, Edgar’s Bakery is a go-to for cakes, cupcakes and other sweets—but did you know they make a killer king cake too?

Head on in a location near you to check out the king cakes, or browse their website. Grab a “mini” king cake for a little treat, or choose one of their larger cakes to share with friends.

2. Savage’s Bakery

Savage’s Bakery & Deli has been a Birmingham landmark for over 85 years. Since 1939, Savage’s has been slinging pastries, rolls, breads and, our favorite, smiley face cookies. Their king cake is a traditional New Orleans-style cake glazed and sprinkled with purple, green and gold.

3. Birmingham Breadworks

This Mardi Gras season, Birmingham Breadworks is pulling out all the stops. They aren’t offering them just yet, but check back in around mid-January.

Their king cake is a unique, spiced brioche filled with cinnamon cream cheese and topped with vanilla glaze. Every order comes with a plastic baby for you to hide yourself, plus a strand of beads.

Can’t finish a king cake? They’re also offering king cake cinnamon rolls—get one before they’re gone.

4. Good Neighbor Baking

Good Neighbor is a boutique bakery in Hoover owned by local baker Ramsey Nuss. While they’re most famous for their mini cookie sandwiches, don’t let Mardi Gras season pass you by without trying their king cake.

Now is the time to pre-order! Pickup dates available to choose from are Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30 in addition to Feb. 6, 13 and 17.

5. Continental Bakery

Continental Bakery in English Village is far and wide one of the most beloved bakeries in Birmingham—and for good reason! Their pastries are made of fresh, local ingredients with quality that can’t be beat, and the king cake is no exception.

Their king cakes aren’t available this year yet, but if you love Continental Bakery, it’s worth putting it on your calendar to swing by closer to Fat Tuesday.

6. Roll Cajun Boudin

Roll Cajun Boudin, a food truck that recently announced it would open a brick-and-mortar location this year, is serving up some king cake this year alongside its other Cajun eats. Bham Now folks tried their strawberry variety, and we can confidently report that it was a delicious Mardi Gras treat!

7. Homewood Gourmet

Homewood Gourmet is known for healthy, seasonal foods from sandwiches to salads and more. This Mardi Gras season, they’ve got king cakes to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings.

Their king cakes come in two flavors: classic cinnamon and cream cheese delight.

8. The Heavenly Donut Co.

We’ve covered king cake cinnamon rolls, but what about king cake doughnuts? These sweet treats are topped with signature Mardi Gras colored sprinkles and, of course, a baby!

9. Hero Donuts

Hero Donuts, which has several locations across Birmingham, generally offers a mouth-watering king cake at about this time of year. While no info has been released yet, employees told Bham Now on Tuesday, Jan. 6 that information about orders would be coming out soon.

10. Piggly Wiggly

Don’t count out the Pig! In a pinch, head to your local Piggly Wiggly for some delicious king cakes, including some straight from Louisiana king cake bakery Caluda’s. Some other grocery stores may also have king cakes in stock, so be sure to give the bakery a quick walk-through next time you shop.
