UAB Health System is kicking off the New Year by acquiring another local healthcare practice. According to a press release, UAB Medicine acquired Southview Medical Group on Thursday, January 1 and now owns the group’s network of providers and facilities.
UAB Health System acquires Southview Medical Group

Dating back to 1922, Southview Medical Group is a local multi-specialty practice that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases for patients in central Alabama. Today, Southview Medical Group’s practice includes 30+ providers in internal medicine, cardiology, infection disease, endocrinology and gastroenterology and cares for more than 51,000 unique patients each year.
“Southview Medical Group has a long-standing reputation for delivering exceptional, patient-centered care. This agreement combines that tradition with the resources and innovation of an academic health system. It also strengthens UAB Medicine’s ability to provide seamless access to primary care, improve care coordination, and ensure patients benefit from the full spectrum of services — from prevention to advanced treatment — right here in Birmingham.”
Dawn Bulgarella, CEO, UAB Health Systems
As part of the agreement finalized on New Year’s Day, UAB Health System now owns Southview Medical Group’s network of providers and facilities, including its locations at UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham and UAB Medicine St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.
“Southview’s integration with the UAB Health System marks a pivotal moment in advancing coordinated, community-based care. We are excited to partner with an institution like UAB that aligns with our goal of providing top quality, cost efficient and timely care for our patients. Our patients will continue seeing their trusted providers while gaining access to UAB’s broader network of specialists, advanced technology and comprehensive care options.”
Noah Fitzpatrick, M.D., President, Southview Medical Group
According to UAB, the new partnership will strengthen access to high-quality care in Birmingham and surrounding communities and position both organizations to meet growing demand for primary and specialty care while addressing healthcare challenges.
The acquisition of Southview Medical Group comes a little over a year after UAB acquired Ascension St. Vincent’s, Birmingham’s oldest hospital and network of medical facilities, in a $450 million agreement.
