5 new businesses (+ 1 closure!) in Birmingham

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town. 

From an outdoor retailer coming to Hoover to a new smoothie cafe in Lee Branch, here are five businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, one Homewood grocery store we won’t see again until the end of 2026.

1. SoCal Smoothies | Lee Branch

A new smoothie and juice bar has officially opened in Lee Branch right off Highway 280.

SoCal Smoothie Company announced the opening of its newest North Shelby location in a Facebook post on Saturday, Dec. 27. SoCal Smoothie Company offers a wide variety of drinks and treats, including smoothies, fruit tea, boba, Acai bowls and more.

2. High Dive | Lakeview

Music lovers in Birmingham now have a new place to congregate, enjoy food & drink designed by James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock and listen to high-fidelity sound.

High Dive is a brand-new listening lounge located at Lakeview Marina, the large new development home to Seasick Records, Classic Cuts Barbershop and Cook Family Dentistry.

3. Sierra | Hoover

Sierra, a retail store whose parent company TJX Companies owns T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, is opening soon in the former Bed Bath & Beyond location next to Trader Joe’s.

Founded in Nevada, the outdoor retailer carries essentials like shoes, fishing tools, coolers, kayaks, tents and activewear.

4. Daiquiri Factory | East Lake

Daiquiri Factory, located in the East Lake neighborhood, is opening at the end of January, and the upcoming spot is already decked in colorful signage.

The new bar is promising “elevated daiquiris, smooth R&B vibes, and an atmosphere where everyone is treated like family,” the co-owner posted on Facebook earlier this month.

5. Einstein Bros Bagel Co. | Highway 280

Signage for a new Einstein Bros Bagel location has popped up on Highway 280 near Meadowbrook! The store is located on the same strip as Dunkin’, across from Chick-fil-A.

Known for its flavored schmears and bagel sandwiches, Einstein will offer a new breakfast option for area residents.

6. Piggly Wiggly | Homewood

The popular Homewood Piggly Wiggly on Montgomery Highway is temporarily closing for a renovation project.

The much-anticipated redevelopment of the beloved “Pig” will bring about some major changes including more space, additional parking, better traffic flow and even a green space.

According to Mayor Jennifer Andress, the store is expected to re-open by the end of 2026.
