Beware, commuters: The next phase of the widening project for Interstate 59 in Trussville may affect your drive.

Starting on the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 6, the Alabama Department of Transportation will move traffic to the outside lanes for northbound construction. There will be three significant ways traffic is affected:

  1. I-59 NB will narrow to one lane at I-459 until traffic joins the temporarily-shifted outside lane just past the juncture
  2. US-11 traffic traveling onto I-459 NB will not be able to merge to take I-59 SB to Birmingham
  3. I-459 NB traffic exiting onto I-59 NB will drop to one lane

There is no definite end date for construction, but the temporary traffic changes could last up to three months. The entire I-59 widening project should be complete by spring 2027.

ALDOT advises that US-11 drivers should find an alternate path to Birmingham. Those traveling on I-59 and I-459 NB should expect delays.

Later in the year, there are plans to close both NB Chalkville Mountain Road ramps (Exit 141) for 40 days.

The contractor will have a $1 million to complete construction and reopen the new, widened NB lanes within eight months.
