Big news for women and families rebuilding their lives in Birmingham—The Lovelady Center is expanding beyond its campus with the purchase of a nearby 56-unit apartment complex.

The nonprofit recently announced the acquisition on Facebook, revealing plans to convert the property into transitional housing for women who have completed the Lovelady Center’s recovery program.

The goal: give graduates a safe, stable place to land as they step back into work, family life and independence without losing access to the support system that helped them get there.

An ideal location for the Lovelady Center

Executive Director Melinda MeGahee said the opportunity arose after the property’s current owners approached the Lovelady Center about purchasing the complex, formerly known as Edgemont Apartments. The complex will provide housing for our NextSteps Aftercare Program.

One of the biggest factors in the decision was proximity. The apartments are located about three blocks from the Lovelady Center, allowing future residents to stay closely connected to services offered through the program, including childcare and ongoing support, while transitioning to independent living.

The apartment complex will soon be known as Brenda’s Courtyard, a tribute to the Lovelady Center’s founder, Brenda Lovelady, who passed away in December 2024.

The name reflects the heart of her mission: meeting women where they are and walking with them toward lasting change.

What current residents should know

Some tenants currently live at the apartment complex, and the Lovelady Center is committed to preventing displacement. The nonprofit is offering a relocation incentive along with the return of security deposits to help current residents move by March 1, while stressing that no one is being forced out.

The Lovelady Center is prepared to work with residents who may need additional assistance or more time during the transition.
