Birmingham-metro gas prices falling fast before holiday travel

Getting ready to pack your bags and travel over the Christmas holidays? 

According to AAA, the national average for gas has dropped below $3 a gallon for the first time in four years this holiday season. As of December 22nd, the average price in Alabama has dropped to $2.56 per gallon.

As a result, AAA expects a record 122.4 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles from home over the 13-day year-end holiday period.

Fuel prices in the Birmingham metro area have fallen significantly over the past week from $2.64 to $2.58, reports AAA.

Here is how the five metro counties fared:

  • Blount County — $2.69
  • Jefferson County — $2.59
  • Shelby County — $2.55
  • Walker County — $2.53
  • St. Clair County — $2.54

The highest gas price in Alabama is Perry County at $3.00, while the lowest is Cullman County at $2.44.
