In September of this year, the Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its 22-lot Roebuck YMCA neighborhood. This morning, they hosted a home dedication and key ceremony for its first three homeowners.

The Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity leadership and volunteers gathered this morning to celebrate the partner families and present the keys to their new homes!

“These first three families represent the heart of our mission. Their perseverance, commitment and partnership with Habitat demonstrate what’s possible when a community comes together to create lasting opportunity.”

Drew Bonner, Chief Operating Officer, Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity

As a symbol of stability and new beginnings, these three families are critical in making the Roebuck YMCA neighborhood a real home.

“These three families who took a leap of faith with us. They saw it when there was not much else but dirt, and said, ‘This is the place I want to make my home.’

They are going to help build it into a community, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome them home.”

22 homes planned for Roebuck YMCA Neighborhood

Neighboring the Northeast Community YMCA campus, located at 628 Red Lane Road, the Roebuck YMCA Neighborhood is intentionally designed to support long-term family stability by offering walkable access to health care, counseling, wellness and community services.

It’s built in partnership with volunteers, community partners and local families who contribute “sweat equity,” complete homeownership education and purchase their homes through affordable, zero-interest mortgages.

Build partners on the project include:

  • VP Funds
  • Housing Affordability Trust
  • Corporate Challenge teams (BL Harbert, Regions Community Engagement, CCR Architecture & Interiors, Norfolk Southern, Rent-A-Center, Zurich North America, The Prewitt Group, Gresham Smith, and Nequette Architecture & Design)’

The goal is to build 22 homes, and they’re already on number four!
