Founded in 1944, the Jimmie Hale Mission is a Birmingham-based charity mission dedicated to providing “pathways to recovery from the root causes of homelessness and unhealthy living through [its] proven process of compassion, guidance and accountability grounded in Christian faith.” Through its programs and facilities, the Jimmie Hale Mission offers safe shelter, meals and other services to the city’s homeless population through three facilities in the Birmingham area:

In October, the Jimmie Hale Mission announced plans for a new emergency shelter to further help the city’s homeless population. According to a City of Birmingham press release, the new facility will include:

  • Nearly 100 dignified shelter beds
  • Family rooms
  • Dining and social spaces
  • Laundry facilities
  • Dedicated areas for case management, healthcare, legal assistance and employment support

Under the agreement, the City of Birmingham will provide $250,000 per year for four years—a total $1M city investment—to support the construction of the new service center.

“This investment reflects our commitment to compassionate, practical solutions that move people from crisis to stability. This project will serve as a bridge and a beacon of hope—connecting our most vulnerable neighbors to housing, healthcare, and the support they need to move forward.”

Alanah Melton, Director of Unhoused Strategies, City of Birmingham

While the nonprofit has long partnered with the City of Birmingham to operate seasonal warming stations and emergency services, this project—with a $4.4M price tag—represents the Mission’s first request for CIty funding towards a capital project.

“Jimmie Hale Mission appreciates the City of Birmingham’s contribution of $250,000 per year for four years toward the total construction cost of $4.4 million and we remain committed to working hard to raise the remaining funds to make this vital service hub a reality for our area’s most vulnerable citizens who need a hand up to be able to return to being healthy, contributing members of their families and the community,”

Perrvn Carool, Executive Director, Jimmie Hale Mission.
