The Birmingham Bowl is Monday, December 29. (BJCC)

The app Wunderfan, created by locals and based out of Innovation Depot, allows sports enthusiasts to earn points for supporting their favorite teams. It especially comes in handy this month, because Birmingham is hosting two major sporting events: the JLab Birmingham Bowl and the C.M. Newton Classic.

Wunderfan partnered with the Greater Birmingham CVB and Knight Eady to give visitors and locals alike an interactive way to explore Birmingham.

Explore Birmingham in a new way through sports

When you download the Wunderfan app, you can earn “wunder,” which can be used to redeem offers and get merch from partner retailers, or to enter for a chance to win prizes—from brands like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lululemon, Uber, DoorDash and more.

You earn points by attending games in person, watching from home or participating in weekly contests.

It brings visitors into local businesses, helping drive economic growth here in Birmingham (and now nationwide). Which is perfect timing for us, because two huge sporting events are happening in Birmingham this month:

What’s in it for Birmingham?

“There are going to be a lot of people coming to Birmingham [for the JLab Birmingham Bowl] to get the full effect. But they might come for 48 or 72 hours, so what are they going to do other than the three hours they’re at the game?

That’s why we bring in sponsors to be ‘earning zones,’ and whether you’re at a local restaurant, hotel or a venue, you can earn extra wunder for being there.”

Blake Patterson, founder, Wunderfan

What you can gain at the Birmingham Bowl and C.M. Newton Classic:

  • Download Wunderfan before the C.M. Newton Classic on Saturday and enter to win four club-level tickets!
  • In the weeks leading up to the JLab Birmingham Bowl, stop by local restaurants and bars serving as “Earning Zones.” Think: Pokémon Go, but for sports.

Be on the lookout for local spots to earn wunder ahead of the bowl game.
