Christopher Agee started picking up Christmas trees in the Birmingham area after the holidays when he was just 13 years old. He’d always been entrepreneurial, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise when he took an interest in starting his own business.

“I used to sell stuff on eBay when I was really little, maybe 12 or 11 years old, through my mom’s account. I always look for some sort of demand.”

He was just 14 when he established his Christmas tree removal service. He couldn’t drive, so his family would drive him around to his customers’ houses.

Now, this will be 17-year-old Agee’s fourth year in business, and he is busier than ever.

Agee’s Xmas Tree Removal

Agee, a junior at Oak Mountain High School, starts the holiday season with handing out fliers while folks are out buying their live Christmas trees. He’s partnered with Lloyd’s Tree Lot in Birmingham, and they help advertise his service to their customers.

Over the years, he has developed relationships with his customers that have led to repeat clients and even some friendships.

‘I was just really happy with the amount of people who helped out through Facebook groups and neighborhood websites, neighbors reaching out. It helped keep me going a bit.”

He already has 25 RSVPs for pickup at the end of December. Last year, he picked up about 45 trees in one week.

Pickup starts at $15 depending on the size of the tree — most pickups, he said, usually end up around $20.

After picking them up, he drops the retired trees at Oak Mountain State Park, which uses them as shelter for rehabilitating our feathered friends.

It all started with a bit of entrepreneurial spirit, but throughout the experience, Agee has learned vital skills in running a business and maintaining connections.
