The new Costco in Irondale is expected to open in Spring of 2028, according to the city’s Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr.

The date was released by the mayor in a WBRC Fox 6 interview and confirmed by Bham Now earlier this week.

Reasons for the extended timeline

One of the most anticipated retail projects in the Birmingham-Metro area, the new 152,000 square foot Costco is expected to bring 200-300 jobs and $6 to $8 million per year in new sales tax revenue to Irondale.

There are a number of reasons for the extended timeline. They include:

  • Construction plans
  • Installing water, electricity and sewer in the area
  • Realign Grants Mill Road with Mercedes Way to make it a safe intersection

The most difficult part of the project is the need to remove 900 cubic yards of solid rock on the site. As a result it will take 12-15 months to do the site, which includes blasting.

In the coming months, the mayor expects to meet with residents from the nearby neighborhoods to discuss the project.

If all goes well, the development should open Spring of 2028.
