Reading time: 3 minutes

Birmingham just landed a major global spotlight. AFAR—one of the travel industry’s most trusted and influential publications—has officially named The Magic City as one of the best places in the world to travel in 2026.
Out of 24 destinations across all seven continents, Birmingham is one of only seven U.S. cities to make the list and the only destination in the Southeast.
Birmingham’s culinary scene

AFAR points directly to Birmingham’s food culture as a major reason the city earned a place on the list. The feature highlights the city’s surge in national attention, noting how Birmingham’s restaurants continue to deliver excellence across genres—from elevated Southern cuisine to world-class seafood, all from our outstanding chefs.
A few local favorites mentioned include:
- Continental Bakery
- Bottega
- Chez Fonfon
- Automatic Seafood & Oysters
- Current Charcoal Grill
- Bayonet
- Armour House
- Pogo
- Johin’na
- Adiõs
This national recognition aligns with what the Birmingham community has been celebrating for years.
“In particular, that Birmingham’s food scene stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the country and around the world. Coming off the success of the Southbound Food Festival and 11 of our restaurants earning Michelin recognition, this honor adds yet another layer of credibility to our region’s culinary story.”
Dan Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau
Birmingham’s outstanding hospitality

Beyond food, AFAR spotlights Birmingham’s evolving hotel scene. Over the past several years, boutique hotels have brought a fresh energy to downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. A few highlights in the feature include:
- Elyton Hotel
- The Painted Lady
These properties add to Birmingham’s approachable yet stylish visitor experience—one that blends modern amenities with walkable districts, historic architecture and rich cultural depth.
A Saturday staple: The Market at Pepper Place

Another standout mentioned by AFAR is The Market at Pepper Place, one of Birmingham’s most beloved community hubs. Every Saturday, the market brings together local farmers, bakers, makers and musicians—drawing thousands from across the region.
For many visitors, it’s the perfect snapshot of Birmingham’s creative energy: fresh produce, handmade goods, lively crowds and an atmosphere that reflects the city’s blend of Southern charm and Birmingham innovation.
Birmingham goes global
As AFAR’s list continues to circulate worldwide, Birmingham’s moment in the spotlight is only growing brighter.
“This recognition from one of the travel industry’s most trusted media outlets reinforces our reputation as a premier destination for visitors from around the world.”
Dan Williams, president and CEO of the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau
With exceptional food and a hospitality scene that continues to expand, it’s clear why the world is taking notice of our amazing city.
