Sure, it’s meaningful that your bank be ranked highly for client satisfaction and trust, but it’s also the sign of a healthy company when the associates enjoy working there, too.

American Banker‘s annual look at the country’s best banks considers a variety of factors when determining its nationwide list, including:

  • the working environment
  • benefits + policies of the bank
  • the strength of the bank itself

Oakworth Capital Bank opened its doors in its Birmingham location in March of 2008 and has since expanded its footprint across the Southeast, including offices in Charlotte, Nashville and Mobile. Scott Reed (CEO) and Sam Scalici (COO)—along with other Oakworth founders and leaders—are guiding the bank’s successful growth and mindful expansion.

“This [latest ranking] is confirmation that what we set out to build is, in fact, what our associates are experiencing.

Being consistent across the entire footprint is hugely important for our associates. It’s also hugely important for our business, because if you have a really strong culture, that translates into the client experience.”

Oakworth CEO Scott Reed

The drive to ensure consistent associate satisfaction is more than just a one-off by the company in order to make the list: The Oakworth leadership team consistently monitors associate feedback via surveys, town halls and on-site conversations at each of its locations. Responses from these measures have netted everything from better break rooms to expanded parental leave.

“[We] really feel like you should leave something better than you found it. And this is our way of leaving Birmingham and the state of Alabama better than we found it. This could be a legacy company that could drive lots of growth and prosperity for people in this area, and that’s a big deal to us.

We want to create a lasting organization that will be appealing to top talent. From anywhere, of course, but certainly for talented people that over the past 20 years have moved out [of Birmingham] to go chase opportunity elsewhere.”

Oakworth CEO Scott Reed

How strong culture translates into the client experience

We visited with the folks at Oakworth over the summer to learn all about their Net Promoter Score (NPS) and how it reflects clients’ positive experiences and likelihood that they would recommend its services. Oakworth Capital Bank has a current score of 94, while the industry average hovers around 30.

This means that the bank’s clients find the Oakworth experience outstanding, too. To the Oakworth leadership, that all circles back—and reflects—the bank’s core values, all of which it asks its associates to exemplify and what keeps this a consistently outstanding place to work.

“This is a validation of our culture that we knew all along would attract high-performing associates. [The ranking] is the result of a lot of great people who are all about our Core Values and working together.”
