New cottages, townhomes coming to Star Uptown development in early 2026

Construction on the much-anticipated Star Uptown development is set to begin in early 2026, bringing new cottages and townhomes to the former Carraway Hospital property by early 2027.
Star Uptown development moving forward

In 2022, the Birmingham City Council approved the demolition of the then-vacant Carraway Hospital, a once-vibrant medical facility in Birmingham’s Norwood neighborhood. Known for its iconic revolving blue star, Carraway Hospital closed its doors in 2008 after facing mounting financial difficulties.
The demolition of Carraway Hospital cleared the way for The Star Uptown, a massive redevelopment of the 52-acre former hospital campus led by CR Endeavors. Plans for the redevelopment were announced in 2019, teasing new multi-family units and single-family cottages, retail, office and entertainment options.

Today, CR-Endeavors CEO Robert Simon joined local officials and neighborhood leaders to announce that construction on The Star Uptown will commence in Spring 2026, following rezoning approval from the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday, December 2.
“We couldn’t be more grateful to the Birmingham City Council, the mayor’s office and most importantly, our Northside Community neighbors as we welcome the next development on this site. We didn’t get to this point without a sustained partnership, and we’re thrilled to see our collective efforts bearing fruit.”

The first phase of the development will bring a total of 64 new one-, two- and three-bedroom cottages and townhomes along a stretch of property facing Carraway Boulevard north of 17th Avenue, as well as a clubhouse to serve the community.
“My top priority as mayor is neighborhood revitalization, and removing blight is a key part of our efforts. This 50-acre site had become one of the biggest blights in our city, and we look forward to the day – soon – when we will see new life in this area.”
Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin

Construction on the new homes will begin as demolition at the old hospital site is wrapping up, and the first homes are expected to be ready for new residents by early 2027.
“We want this site to once again be an asset for our community, and we have seen the beginnings of that with the amphitheater. We are eager to see the rest of the property developed and especially excited to see the addition of homes and housing options for people in the neighborhood.”
LaTonya Tate, Birmingham City Council President Pro Tem

As residential construction continues in 2026, CR-Endeavors also anticipates laying the groundwork for commercial and entertainment venues that are slated to be built further south on the site.
“Even though there are challenges sometimes to living near the city’s biggest entertainment district, the Northside Community has been so happy to see this site being transformed into something that brings value to our neighborhoods. It’s been wonderful to see so many people coming to the amphitheater, and we are eager to see more people come here to live, work and play.”
Barbara Thomas, president of the Norwood Neighborhood Association
