Joe’s Italian in Alabaster won Best Old-School Italian Restaurant in Alabama
Reading time: 3 minutes

According to a new ranking from Cheapism.com, Joe’s Italian has officially been named the hottest old-school Italian restaurant in Alabama. From beloved local spots to historic eateries that have been around for generations, the list highlights nostalgic, family-run restaurants—and Joe’s topped the list for our state.
If you’ve never made the trip to Alabaster for an incredible carb-filled meal, here’s why it’s worth the drive—plus what I personally love to order from this local gem.
What to order at Joe’s Italian in Alabaster

Just a short drive south on I-65 from Birmingham, Joe’s sits slightly off the beaten path—but reviewers (and me) say it’s more than worth the quick detour. While classics like lasagna and spaghetti always hit the spot, Joe’s has built a reputation on something unexpected: its desserts.
Cheapism specifically recommends the strawberry cake, and honestly, I could not agree more. It’s iconic.
Some of my personal favorites at Joe’s Italian include the Bianca Lasagna, made with house-made cream sauce, house-made sausage, spinach, mozzarella and Parmigiano. If you’re a creamy-sauce person, this one’s a must.
Pro tip: Whatever entrée you order, save room for dessert. The cake case is legendary.
History of Joe’s Italian
Joe’s Italian first opened its doors in 2007, thanks to Giuseppe “Joe” Bertolone and his family, who moved to Alabama after years in the restaurant business in California. With his children, Sonia and Michael, helping run the show, Joe built a warm, family-driven spot that quickly became a local favorite.
After Joe passed away that same year, the family eventually sold the restaurant to Clean Plate Restaurants Inc. in 2014—but the heart of Joe’s stayed the same. The new owners kept 90% of the original staff, preserving the flavors and friendly atmosphere people loved.
This past September, they even opened a bar area!
