STEM education is thriving across the state, and the Greater Birmingham Area is playing a major role. Niche just released its 2026 Best Schools for STEM in Alabama rankings, and several local standouts made the Top 10. Read on to find out which Birmingham-area schools are setting the bar for science, technology, engineering and math.

How the rankings work

To build its STEM ranking, Niche analyzed a range of metrics, including:

  • Data from the U.S. Department of Education
  • Standardized test scores
  • Feedback from students + parents
  • Number of students interested in STEM majors
  • Student-teacher ratios
  • Enrollment in advanced math+ science classes 
  • STEM strength of the colleges students go on to attend

Top Birmingham-area schools for STEM

In the Birmingham metro, four schools landed in the Top 10 statewide for STEM:

  • #2—Indian Springs School (private)
  • #5—Mountain Brook High School (public)
  • #8—The Altamont School (private) 
  • #10—Alabama School of Fine Arts (public)
