One of the Birmingham area’s favorite coffee shops, Cala Coffee, is getting a third location in 2026.

Bham Now got the chance to talk to Cala co-owner Josh Cosio on Friday afternoon following the announcement. Here’s what we know about the upcoming Mountain Brook café.

New Cala Coffee location in Mountain Brook

The local coffee chain announced Friday afternoon on social media that the shop would open in Mountain Brook Village on Montevallo Road.

Josh Cosio, who co-owns the chain with his wife Melanie, said that as their company has grown and become more efficient, they have had more space to start exploring opportunities for further growth.

“We really like the idea of being in some neighborhood communities throughout the Birmingham area…

“We were really trying to find a small, charming spot in a walkable neighborhood, and we found that in Mountain Brook Village. It’s a very iconic village in the Birmingham area with lots of really popular brands and brands that have been there for a long time, so we are excited for the opportunity to be in the neighborhood.”

Cala Coffee will take the place of Suite Dreams, a custom bedding and home decor store that closed its doors in 2024, located at 2409 Montevallo Road.

The storefront is almost entirely windows, meaning this Mountain Brook location will have amazing natural light — perfect for a study session, remote working or catching up with friends.

This location, Cosio said, will be smaller and “more intimate” than their Cahaba Heights location.

“It will be more of an entertainment setting, smaller set-up in terms of the coffee bar, and there’s also a pretty cool back room, so it’ll be our first time having a location with two separate areas.

“It’s basically a blank slate on the inside, unlike our downtown location that was previously a coffee shop.”

The Mountain Brook location will feature Cala’s normal selection of pastries from Bandit Pâtisserie and breakfast tacos from Ladybird Taco.

The Cosios will be working with local designers: Christine Thornton with Studio Vestige for interior design and Andrew Thomson with A Studio for branding.

As for the question on everyone’s mind, Cala Coffee in Mountain Brook is planning on opening spring 2026 — construction could take anywhere from two to six months, and they are expecting some delays due to the holidays.

“We’re trying to enjoy the process of designing it and building it out…We’re trying not to be in a rush, and we’re shooting for sometime in the spring, but there’s no guarantee.”
