Meet the tutor making a difference in Birmingham kids’ reading

Tutor Carol Sosnin is leading Maria on her reading journey. She’s been volunteering with STAIR of Birmingham for nine years, helping boost students’ reading confidence and skills through one-on-one tutoring.
“I wanted to do something that mattered to someone, I just didn’t realize how much it would matter to me.”

Last year, Maria completed 36 lessons and saw a 40% gain in spelling.
But these numbers are just part of the story. With Carol guiding the way, Maria has gained a love for reading, curiosity and knowledge that hard work leads to big achievements.
“It’s not just about reading words. It’s about showing these kids they can tackle challenges and celebrate milestones.”

A closer look at STAIR of Birmingham

If you’re looking for a local organization to support, STAIR of Birmingham is it—and it comes with enough heartwarming stories to make you melt.
STAIR, which stands for Start the Adventure in Reading, is a local nonprofit dedicated to giving Birmingham elementary students the one-on-one support they need to thrive in reading. Many program participants come from under-resourced communities where a little extra help can make a world of difference.
During the school year, students meet with volunteer tutors twice a week for 45 minutes. They tackle letter combinations, rhymes and share a book together—making reading practice both fun and effective.

Their mom, who works at Tuggle Elementary, gets to watch her kiddos progress from just a few steps away, seeing them light up with excitement over each new book and skill they master.
