New cocktail bar + restaurant coming to Five Points South
Reading time: 2 minutes

Coming soon, a “chic lounge” is opening in the long-vacant Shepherd-Sloss Building located in Five Points South.
Sakéroom will be located at 2007 Highland Ave South and promises “redefined” late-night energy.
“Sakéroom is Birmingham’s only late-night sushi lounge — a modern, Tokyo-inspired destination where dining meets nightlife. Guests can enjoy elevated sushi, handcrafted cocktails, and one of the city’s best happy hours, all set to live music and DJs on the weekends. It’s a culinary and social experience designed to engage every sense.”

A recent post shared by JBG Design Studio and Sakéroom shows interior design inspired by Tokyo street art, with the walls covered in neon art and paper lanterns along the ceiling.
Completed in 1928, the Shepherd-Sloss Building has been largely unoccupied for the last several years, but it has been home to restaurants, nightclubs, shops and other businesses such as:
- Cadillac Cafe
- Bell Bottoms
- Uranus
- Crush
- Fletcher’s
- Black Market Bar + Grill
- Buck Mulligan’s
- Kohinoor
- Pyramid’s
- Little New Orleans
- Twist & Shout piano bar
- Dugan’s
Most of the spaces within the Shepherd-Sloss Building are up for lease by commercial real estate company Tally. Rachel Romano and Trish Rushing of Red Rock Realty Group represented the new tenant.
One current business in the building is Pop’s Neighborhood Grill, a family owned American cuisine restaurant, located around the corner at 1207 20th St S.
