After another big announcement this week, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) informed commuters that Highway 280 will be completely closed at Pump House Road starting Friday, Nov. 14.

In order for construction crews to safely install 100-foot beams across the highway, all lanes will be closed.

Here’s what you should know:

  • ALL LANES of US-280 at Pump House Road will be closed after 11PM on Friday, Nov. 14 through Sunday, Nov. 16
  • At 5AM each morning, westbound lanes will reopen, but eastbound lanes will remain closed
  • All lanes are expected to reopen by 6AM on Monday, Nov. 17
  • Pump House Road Bridge, the eastbound off-ramp and the westbound on-ramp will remain open

Due to the anticipated heavy traffic, ALDOT recommends the following detours:

  • Eastbound: Lakeshore Parkway to I-65, to I-459, to US-280
  • Westbound: The same route in reverse order

After that, ALDOT says the remaining Pump House Road Bridge replacement project will take place during the day.

About the project

Starting Nov. 10, contractors will stage bridge construction work on Pump House Road and the connected ramps. The work will take place on the evenings of Nov. 10 and 11, weather permitting.

Most of the Pump House Bridge replacement project will take place during the daytime, but for the next two weeks, girder installation will be at night.

Other 280 closures

Throughout November, two lanes on a 4-mile strip of 280 will be closed.

The right lanes of 280 Eastbound and Westbound will be closed between 7PM and 6AM on Sunday through Thursday nights for widening. Construction began Sunday, Nov. 2.

The closures will be between Milepost 1.39 — approximately located at Shades Creek Parkway — and Milepost 4.51 — just past Interstate 459 at about Colonnade Drive.

ALDOT said Wednesday that there will be additional weekend road closures announced in the coming weeks.
