Birmingham winter is fast approaching, which means it’s time to treat dry skin with a spa day! (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

I love the colder weather just as much as (and probably more than) the next person. But I also know that cold weather in Birmingham typically means my skin gets drier and more irritated. Once the Alabama humidity disappears, our skin is left to fend for itself.

My coworker Grace and I wanted to get ahead of the game, so we went to Mockingbird Day Spa in Trussville for some timely treatment and skincare tips. Keep reading for what we got and why you should book your next spa day, too!

Caring for your skin starts at home

I got all the insider tips from Brittany at Mockingbird Day Spa. (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

Taking care of your skin during cold and dry months (we’re not quite there, but I feel it coming) can take a lot of effort. Here’s one thing you need to remember: hydrate!

The key is not only how much hydration we consume, but how much external hydration we get from the environment and skin care products.

A few things you can do at home to take better care of your skin this winter:

  • Run a humidifier (or several) in your house, especially in your bedroom.
  • Exfoliate your face + body regularly so that any hydrating products you use absorb better.
  • Use an oil with your moisturizer to help create a barrier on your skin so you don’t lose hydration.

Now that you’ve got your at-home plan in place, it’s a great time to get some hands-on care from the experts.

If you’re unsure which ones to try, Mockingbird Day Spa can help with that, and they even have tons of goodies on display in their spa. Guess you’ll have to book your appointment and check it all out.

Alabama winter can be harsh, but Mockingbird Day Spa can help

I know what you’re thinking: “What services do I need to help keep my skin healthy this winter?” I wondered the same thing, and I got to the bottom of it at Mockingbird Day Spa.

‘Tis the season for clinical peels

Grace gave rave reviews on her HydroDiamond facial. (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

Grace got the HydroDiamond and Dermaplane facial, and she was completely glowing after. Brittany from Mockingbird walked us through the steps and explained how it helps:

  • Removes the fine, vellus hair most of us have on our faces so skincare + makeup applies smoothly
  • Hydrodermabrasion + oxygen infusion facial give a better penetration of serums into the skin
  • Concludes with facial massage + masque

You can also add a clinical peel to any facial—this is where they use solutions to carefully remove layers of damaged skin and reveal the healthier skin underneath.

Mockingbird Day Spa recommends starting with a gentle peel and then slowly strengthening. Plus, you can prepay for a series of facials at up to a 10% discount!

Get your skin winter-ready with a full-body scrub

Make a little time to pamper your skin this season, Birmingham. (Nathan Watson / Bham Now)

I got the full-body scrub and wrap, and it made a huge difference in my already-dry skin!

During this treatment, they use Eminence Organic products to exfoliate your skin, then remove it with warm towels, apply a full body masque and then cocoon you up for 10-15 minutes of meditative relaxation.

If you opt out of the full-body scrub and wrap, you can go with Mockingbird’s “Brush & Flush” for 15 minutes of dry brushing and 15 minutes of face/neck lymph drainage or add dry brushing to any massage. Both of these treatments are great ways to exfoliate your skin and decrease swelling.

Mockingbird and these top-notch treatments are only a short 25-minute drive from downtown to Trussville, too! Grace and I are already checking our calendars to book our next appointment.

How are you taking care of your skin this season? Let Mockingbird Day Spa help you out.
