Birmingham’s favorite nonprofit bike shop has a new location! Since its founding in 2013, Redemptive Cycles has been a local hub for almost anything on two wheels, offering affordable refurbished bikes, repairs and hosting community riding events that bring together cyclists of all skill levels.

Redemptive Cycles recently completed a move to a new, larger facility in downtown Birmingham. We caught up with Executive Director Brian Gosdin to learn more.

For over a decade, Redemptive Cycles has been an invaluable resource for the cycling community in Birmingham. Inside the shop, customers will find both new and refurbished bikes, parts and accessories, along with advice and repair services from Redemptive’s team of mechanics.

But Redemptive Cycles is more than just a bike shop. Through initiatives like the Earn-a-Bike program, adults without dependable transportation can trade volunteer hours for a refurbished bike, helmet, lock and lights, while the Sliding Scale Repairs program fixes bikes for those who don’t have the funds to cover a repair.

Redemptive also offers several bike maintenance courses, valet bike parking at events across Birmingham and a weekly Thursday night group ride called Trample, where anyone can join a cruise through one of Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods.

“Some people depend on a bike to get to work, while others enjoy riding for their physical or mental well-being. Either way, we want to make obtaining, using and maintaining a bike accessible.”

After over a decade in the ACME Building at 1305 2nd Avenue North, Redemptive Cycles has completed its move to a new location, a few blocks west at 906 1st Avenue North. Nearly twice the square footage of its previous space and strategically located off I-65, Redemptive Cycles’ new space puts the nonprofit in a great position to grow and thrive.

“Our former location worked for what it was, but we didn’t have any room for expansion. It was tricky to take in large donations—once we had more than 20 donated bikes, we couldn’t walk around in the place.

Although we still need to come up with the money to install HVAC, new lighting and repaint the exterior, we love this space and can tell it’ll be a great home for Redemptive moving forward.”

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A wide variety of new + refurbished bicycles and other two-wheeled modes of transportation
  • Bike locks, spare parts, helmets, apparel and other accessories
  • Redemptive employees repairing and refurbishing pre-loved bikes

Now that the Redemptive team has successfully moved its equipment and inventory into the new space, it’s focused on building out the new facility.

To make that happen, Redemptive Cycles has launched a build-out campaign to bring the new space fully to life, adding a HVAC system, new bike storage systems, improved lighting, outdoor branding and more. Visit the Redemptive Cycles website to learn more and support its build-out campaign.
