Birmingham’s Day of the Dead festival is just around the corner!
Also known as Día de los Muertos, this colorful and vibrant event draws inspiration from Mexican traditions to honor and celebrate loved ones who have passed away. While the festival embraces a solemn theme, it’s also a joyful celebration that expresses love and respect for family and friends no longer with us.
Here are six ways you can celebrate in Birmingham.
1. Día de los Muertos—Bare Hands Inc.


Join Bare Hands, Inc. in celebrating life at Día de los Muertos Número 23 at the historic Sloss Furnaces.
This is one of the largest, most complex and beautiful Day of the Dead celebrations in the South. Here are a few things you can expect to see at this festival:
- Art installations + artist market
- Food trucks
- Live music performances
- Parade procession with puppets
- Homemade altars (ofrendas)
- Kids activities
There is something for the whole family to enjoy at this vibrant, community-centered experience.

2. Festival Día de los Muertos Montevallo
Get ready for a colorful celebration full of delicious traditional food, lively music and stunning altars bursting with vibrant colors!
The Día de los Muertos Montevallo Festival offers family-friendly fun, cultural activities and a joyful atmosphere where the community comes together to honor loved ones and create unforgettable memories. It’s a night of love, laughter and lively tradition you won’t want to miss.

3. Día de los Muertos party with SSMC

6. Celebrate Día de los Muertos + 3 Years of Adiõs

Join founders José Medina Camacho and Jesús Méndez to celebrate Día de los Muertos and the third anniversary of Adiõs! Gather around the team’s permanent ofrenda—a year-round tribute to memory and tradition—and enjoy two days of festivities, featuring DJs on both Saturday and Sunday, along with birthday cake and giveaways on Sunday.
Plus, on Sunday, November 2, Nightshade will be popping up outside Adiõs, serving up delicious flat-top brisket sandwiches with their signature Nightshade hot sauce at 4 PM. Don’t miss this special celebration!
