This week, Birmingham officially opened its first all-inclusive playground at Bessie Estell Park.

According to the Birmingham Park Board years ago they were approached by a mom named Veronica Ware who wanted an accessible playground for her daughter Braelynn who was disabled.

Thanks to Veronica and Braelynn the city made their dream of an accessible playground come true.

Unfortunately, before the playground was finished, Braelynn passed away.

The city honored her at the grand opening by naming the entrance to the new playground “Braelynn’s Way.”

A state-of-the-art playground, some of the accessible elements include:

  • Slides
  • Swings
  • Seesaws

“The All-Inclusive Playground at Bessie Estell Park is a first for Birmingham and an answer to the prayers of parents of disabled children like Braelynn. The Glen Iris Neighborhood Association has been working to get this playground built for over a decade and now it’s a team effort to work on Phase 2 fundraising to finish the job!”

Valerie Abbott, Birmingham City Councilor

The park and playground are located at 901 8th Street South.
