5 new openings (+ 1 closure) in Birmingham this week

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town.
From a new post-dinner snack bar on 2nd Ave North to a major construction project in Chelsea, here are five businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, one local business that has will soon be closing its doors.

1. Nightcap | 2nd Ave N


Have you ever wanted a late-night sweet treat after going out for dinner downtown? While some restaurants have a handful of dessert options, downtown Birmingham severely lacked a dedicated dessert space—until now.
Located just across the street from Bamboo on 2nd, Nightcap was designed to help cater to the demand for post-dinner eats and drink.

2. Southside Southern | Highway 280

There’s a new spot to shop on 280. Southside Southern, a women’s boutique, is officially open in the Cahaba Market shopping center. Southside Southern aims to bring a little bit of everything, with a strong focus on fun, wearable style including every day wear, jewelry, accessories, game day clothes and shoes.
According to their Facebook, the boutique’s name is a tribute to the owners and their roots: one half of the team grew up on the Southside of Chicago and the other was raised in the South.

3. Blazer’s Grill | UAB

As part of a renovation of the Hilton Birmingham Downtown at UAB, the hotel has unveiled a fresh, rebranded restaurant: Blazer’s Grill located on the corner of University Boulevard and 20th Street South.
Blazer’s Grill will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (plus late-night bar snacks!) You can expect a variety of Sicilian-style pizzas, handhelds, soups and salads including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options.

4. El Tigre | Downtown Birmingham

Local entrepreneur Jesus Mendez has chosen the historic Brown Marx Annex in downtown Birmingham as the future home for his newest endeavor, El Tigre.
While Mendez has not yet revealed many details about El Tigre, he and his team are behind several popular establishments in the Birmingham area, including Salud, Adiós, The Louis Bar and Unos Tacos.

5. Chick-fil-A | Chelsea Plaza

A new Chick-fil-A is coming to Chelsea, according to Mayor Tony Picklesimer’s recent State of the City address.
The new restaurant is part of a new $75M development in the area. Called the Chelsea Plaza, the development will sit off of the eastbound side of Hwy 280 near the intersection of Chesser Plantation Lane and the highway.

6. Homewood Shoe Hospital | Homewood

A long-standing Homewood local business will close its doors in December.
Homewood Shoe Hospital, which has been in operation since the ‘60s, announced on Facebook on Friday, Oct. 10 that the business would retire from shoe repair to move on exclusively to a shoe lift service.
While the shoe hospital originally specialized in shoe repairs, owner Victor Costa told “Birmingham” magazine in 2016 that there was a much higher demand for orthotics.
