One question is on Blazer fans’ minds after Trent Dilfer was dismissed Sunday afternoon by UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram: Who will be taking his place?

There is a long list of potential candidates, according to The Athletic and Sporting News.

Coaches that made both national publications’ lists are:

  • Bill Clark, former UAB head coach
  • Ed Orgeron, former LSU head coach
  • Skip Holtz, Birmingham Stallions head coach

Other coaches on The Athletic’s list:

  • Bryant Vincent, Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks coach
  • Neal Brown, former West Virginia University head coach
  • Tyson Helton, Western Kentucky head coach
  • Drew Cronic, United States Naval Academy offensive coordinator
  • Kerwin Bell, Western Carolina University head coach
  • Mike Jacobs, Mercer University head coach
  • Steve Englehart, Presbyterian College head coach
  • Tremaine Jackson, Prairie View A&M University head coach

Sporting News identified three other coaches:

  • Brent Pry, Virginia Tech ex-head coach
  • Clint Kilough, University of the Incarnate Word head coach
  • Tom Herman, former University of Texas at Austin coach

UAB fans weigh-in

The fan favorites? Bham Now asked on our social media.

The obvious choice, according to the fans, is Coach Clark. And who can blame them? Clark brought back the football team after it was disbanded after the 2014 season and miraculously won a C-USA championship in 2018.

UAB fans have a very high opinion of Holtz, the Stallions head coach who has won three of the last four USFL/UFL championships.

Other names fans suggested were former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and University of West Alabama’s head coach and former University of Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran.

Another wild card? UAB great Roddy White has publicly declared his interest.

And of course, there is always a chance UAB might stick with interim head coach Alex Mortensen. If he beats 22nd-ranked Memphis and University South Florida — the conqueror of the Florida Gators — Mortensen would likely win the job.
