The much-anticipated free, in-school grocery store at Huffman Middle School has opened.

Thanks to the leadership of Birmingham City Councilor Clinton Woods, Birmingham City Schools and the local community, the pilot program will offer families at the middle school the following food staples:

  • Fresh produce
  • Eggs
  • Bread
  • Meats

The company Goodr, which already operates another free and low-cost grocery location in Birmingham, will manage the Huffman Middle School grocery store.

In addition to providing food at the 300-square-foot grocery store, the company also measures the impact of the program through proprietary tech tracking food access and waste prevention — ensuring families and schools benefit over time.

“Today is a momentous day at Huffman Middle School. We can proudly say, success starts here AND hunger stops here.”

Dr. Jeffery Willis, Sr., Huffman Middle School Principal

At today’s ribbon cutting, both Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Mark Sullivan and Councilor Wood expressed interest in expanding the innovative program and making it sustainable and permanent.

The Huffman Middle School grocery store pilot project has enough funding for two years.
