A nearly finished mural depicting the Woodlawn neighborhood in Birmingham was unveiled at the Woodlawn Saturday Supper event this past weekend.

Called “Stars Fell on Woodlawn”, the mural is 90% complete, celebrating the history and people of Woodlawn, a neighborhood that predates Birmingham and was annexed in 1910.

Painted by Erica Chisolm, the mural features:

  • Woodlawn Theatre
  • Woodlawn’s first library
  • Coffee shops
  • Barbara Merchant, neighborhood matriarch
  • Tony Nathan, Alabama and Miami Dolphins football star
  • Birmingham City Councilor JT Moore’s daughter, Nori Moore and local residents

“I just wanted to make sure that I told the story of Woodlawn in a mural. I don’t think there’s hardly any murals in the city of Birmingham that tells the story of a sacred neighborhood, that’s what we wanted to do here.”

Erica Chisolm, muralist

Located at the corner of 55th Place and 1st Avenue South, the mural was commissioned by Woodlawn United. The beloved community group is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this Fall.
