First things first: Business License 101
A business license is basically your official permission slip to operate in Jefferson County (and the State of Alabama). Think of it as the government’s way of knowing that your business is legit.
Here’s why it matters:
- It’s required by law—operating without one can lead to fines or penalties.
- It keeps you compliant with state, county + sometimes city regulations.
- It helps customers trust you—showing you’re running a professional, recognized business.
If you’re opening a restaurant, starting a new company or setting up shop online, chances are you’ll need a license to make it official.

- Review your billing statement
- Your initial cost the first year will be $50, and every year beyond that it will change depending on your business’s gross revenue. Most people’s cost will remain between $50-$100.
- Check for regulatory permits
- Some industries (auto dealers, food establishments, HVAC contractors, etc.) need extra permits before a license can be issued. See the Handbook for Alabama Business Licenses.

- Fees vary by business type, size + location
- Check with your city
- *Note: Most cities located inside Jefferson County require a city business license which will be in addition to state licenses. Check with your local city to see if you also need to obtain a city business license in addition to the state licenses.
“If you’re applying for your business license for the first time and need a hand with the process, you’re welcome to come in-person to the Jefferson County Department of Revenue. There, we’ll help you apply for your license, public tax and license number to get your business started.
Depending on the type of business you have, you also may have to submit further permits. For example, if you owned a food truck, we’ll contact you and ask for the health department permit before we can issue a license. If you’re ever wondering, don’t hesitate to come in-person or call.”
