As the way we get info and consume media evolves, there’s one constant that serves as a beacon for sharing knowledge, expanding our exposure to the arts and simply gathering together for a smile and a cup of coffee: The public library.
That’s why we were so excited to get an exclusive early look at the soon-to-open Irondale Public Library. Come along as we tour the new space, learn what Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. and the City of Irondale did to make it happen and invite you to the grand opening celebration on Saturday, October 11.
What to expect at the new Irondale library

There’s something about the quiet, order and care where books are housed, and I love how libraries have evolved with the times to become community hubs.
While the previous Irondale library had served the community since 1973, the new location offers modern conveniences and special touches like:
- A quiet reading room for adults
- A children’s section with a story time area + interactive play kitchen
- Small study rooms for meetings + remote work
- A used bookstore
- A room devoted to Irondale history, including an original table + typewriter from the previous library
- Multiple meeting spaces, including a room for adult crafts
- A separate teen area
- A vending machine with “smart choices” + coffee
- A large conference room with attached kitchenette for larger city meetings
“What I’m most excited about is being able to say ‘yes!’ when asked if we have study rooms, a vending machine or other amenities. Previously we had to send them to other libraries, but now we can meet the needs of what people are looking for in Irondale.
We were able to design this library for how people are wanting to use it now and how we anticipate that evolving in the future.”
Tamara Tackett, Associate Director of Irondale Public Library
How the Irondale community supported the new library

During our tour, I was able to meet Irondale Public Library’s Director, Del Wilson, who has been an employee for 48 years, as well as Associate Director Tamara Tackett. They both shared their appreciation to Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. and Irondale citizens:
“Our new library wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Mayor Stewart. About four years ago, he came to a board meeting and said, ‘I think it’s time to build a new library,’ and people cheered. We’re forever grateful.”
Del Wilson, Director of Irondale Public Library
“We’re extremely appreciative to Mayor Stewart and the Irondale community. It speaks really highly to the support of our administration and the citizens that the mayor initiated this. We didn’t have to beg. The fact that 75% voted yes for the property tax referendum…people were excited and behind this, which reaffirms that this is something the city needs. We can all be on the same page, and it’s really encouraging.”
