Breast cancer changed Tiarra Hooks’ life in Spring 2023—and it didn’t just affect her, it touched her whole family.
A Bessemer native now living in Hoover with her husband and three kids, Tiarra is showing how a life-changing diagnosis doesn’t have to stop you, but can inspire you to fully embrace life.
I sat down with Tiarra to hear her story of strength and faith, and now, I’m here to tell you!
Keep reading to hear her story, see how her community has lifted her up and find out how you can cheer her on at a special fashion show next week.
Tiarra Hooks’ breast cancer journey

In January of 2023, Tiarra noticed a lump in her breast. In March of that year, she followed up with her doctor to schedule a mammogram.
The results came back, and Tiarra was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma stage IIIB.
From there, Tiarra’s life looked a little like this:
- March 2023: Started chemotherapy
- August 2023: Finished chemotherapy
- October 2023: Single mastectomy operation
- December 2023: Began radiation treatment
- January 2024: Finished 21 treatments of radiation
- Now: Cancer free!
Even through a year of life change, treatments and uncertainty, Tiarra kept the faith and a smile on her face.
Now, she’s an encouragement to others going through similar trials.
“I looked at this diagnosis and said: I can be ‘woe is me,’ or I can take the positive days as they come and take time for myself on the trying days. And that’s what I did.
When I had a good day, I lived in that good day, but I also allowed grace for myself when I didn’t feel well or have the energy to be super mom.”
Tiarra found community at Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center

In the midst of her treatment, Tiarra found Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center.
The Birmingham-based organization strives to “improve the quality of life and health outcomes for breast cancer survivors and their caregivers.”
“At first, I was trying to process my diagnosis while still trying to be a mom, wife and manage the household. I didn’t initially jump into participating in Forge.”
The first event I went to was Zumba. Doing that and seeing different people in different stages of their lives enjoy those few minutes together was so motivating and uplifting. I was like, ‘Yeah, I think I like this!’
Forge stands as a pillar of hope for those affected by breast cancer—taking as many things off their plates as they can.
For Tiarra, it was a fun afternoon dancing with others like her. But this organization also offers:
- A hardship fund to help with rent, utility bills, child care and more.
- Free wigs
- Gas + grocery cards
- Mastectomy bra fittings
“Whether you’re in active treatment and needing assistance with food or gas, or if you’re post-treatment and looking for community—I appreciate Forge being there during every step of the journey.”
Forge empowers patients, survivors + families

While 99% of breast cancer diagnoses are in women, the entire family can feel the effects emotionally.
For this reason, the org offers counseling services for not only patients and survivors, but also for their families and loved ones.
Plus, Forge offers statewide support groups for:
- Co-survivors (loved ones)
- Metastatic stage IV breast cancer patients
- Spanish speakers
- Young breast cancer survivors
- and more
