Choosing a financial institution is about so much more than money in-money out: It’s establishing a trusted relationship, providing a personalized experience and meeting the needs of a changing economy.

Fortunately, there’s an interesting metric that reliably identifies how real clients rank companies.

We’ll tell you what that is, why it’s important and how one Birmingham-headquartered financial services institution—Oakworth Capital Bank—boasts a consistently spectacular score. You can like your bank, but here’s why clients love this one.

What is Net Promoter Score and why is it important?

If you want to know a local restaurant or business is worth a visit, what do you do? You check out their ratings. While online reviews are worth a peruse, there’s a better way to vet corporations. It’s called a NPS, or Net Promoter Score.

Among other things, NPS basically measures how likely you are to recommend a company to friends and family. It’s a great way to have an independent perspective that a company is creating value. Here’s how it breaks down on average:

  • NPS ranks a company between 100 (excellent) to -100 (poor)
  • A score of 50 is considered good
  • A score of 70 is elite
  • Oakworth Capital Bank has been above 90 on the NPS scale since it started surveying clients; it has a current score of 94 as of press time (that’s especially impressive when you consider the average hovers around 30 for its industry counterparts!).

Not only is Oakworth’s score exceptionally high on the NPS scale, they also boast a high client retention rate of 95% as of last year.

“Clients tend to remain with companies that they trust and they value the relationship with the people that serve them.

We invest time at the beginning of any potential relationship to understand what is important to that prospective client.  We make certain we are aligned in order to help clients achieve success.”

Oakworth was founded and maintains Birmingham headquarters, but it’s growing throughout the Southeast to locations like Charlotte, Mobile and Nashville.

“As a Birmingham native, I’m very proud that Oakworth was born in Birmingham! We developed our client-centric approach in the Central Alabama area.

I believe that our clients appreciate working with people that are a part of their community and bring familiar sensibilities to our relationships.”

At the heart of the feedback they’ve received, a few guiding principles bubble to the top. Here are a few reviews from their NPS survey (check out more client feedback here):

  • It’s about putting people first: “The associates at Oakworth across all departments are responsive, helpful and genuinely care about the clients and each other, which provides a very positive client experience.” – July 16, 2025 — Rated 10 out of 10 by A.W.
  • It’s about service that’s real + personalized: “I like that I can always talk to a person and not a call center when I have a problem.” July 9, 2025 — Rated 10 out of 10 by H.K.
  • It’s about making it easy: “Personalized, meets our unique needs as a high net worth family, so easy to work with”   July 10, 2025 — Rated 10 out of 10 by J.E.

We recently spent a morning with the Oakworth team to hear why their ranking and client retention is so important to them and how it drives their team:
