The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has once again been recognized the Great Colleges to Work For® program—this year, receiving its prestigious Honor Roll distinction for the first time.
Great Colleges to Work For names UAB to Honor Roll

The largest employer in Alabama has a new distinction to add to its belt: an Honor Roll designation from the Great Colleges to Work For program.
The largest and most comprehensive study in higher education, the Great Colleges to Work For program provides educational institutions with employee feedback that provides valuable insight into campus culture and work environment. This year, more than 5,000 UAB employees (48% of faculty and 57% of staff) participated in the survey.
“Earning this Honor Roll distinction speaks to our dedication to shared governance, collaboration and continually making UAB an even better workplace.
It also reflects the deep sense of pride we have in the great work we’re doing together and in the positive impact we’re having on lives throughout our community, state and beyond.”
Ray Watts, President, University of Alabama at Birmingham
This year, UAB was recognized as high-performing in six categories:
- Job satisfaction and support
- Compensation and benefits
- Supervisor/department chair support
- Faculty and staff well-being
- Shared governance
- Faculty experience
UAB was one of only two colleges in Alabama to make the 2025 Great Colleges to Work For list; Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, AL was recognized in one category.

UAB was first recognized by Great Colleges to Work For in 2023; this year, the institution received the prestigious Honor Roll distinction for the first time.
“UAB was recognized among Great Colleges to Work For in both 2023 and 2025. But this is the first time we have also been named among the institutions setting the bar nationally on the Honor Roll.
We are proud our ongoing commitment to improvement continues to enhance the work experience for our faculty and staff.”
Janet May, Chief Human Resource Officer, University of Alabama at Birmingham
