For the first time in several months, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) has issued a CODE ORANGE air quality alert for Jefferson and Shelby Counties.

What does a CODE ORANGE air quality alert mean?

A CODE ORANGE alert means that the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, which include:

  • Children
  • The elderly
  • People with conditions like asthma or heart disease

During a CODE ORANGE alert, people in these groups should reduce their time outside and avoid strenuous activity.

According to a press release, the CODE ORANGE alert was triggered by higher-than-normal ground-level ozone concentrations.

According to the Alabama Partners for Clean Air, there are several actions (and inactions) you can take to cut back on pollution:

  • Cut back driving by carpooling, walking, biking or using public transit
  • Combine errands into one trip
  • Postpone unnecessary travel
  • Limit engine idling; avoid drive throughs
  • Refuel vehicles after 6PM
