Birmingham CrossPlex now home to first-ever KultureCity Sensory Pod

Founded in Birmingham in 2013, KultureCity is a local nonprofit leading the push for sensory inclusion by “creating sensory accessibility and inclusion for those with invisible disabilities.” For individuals with invisible disabilities (such as autism, PTSD, dementia and sensory processing disorders), common sounds, lights, crowds and even certain smells can be not just overwhelming, but physically painful.
To help accommodate those with special sensory needs, KultureCity provides:
- Staff training to recognize and assist individuals with sensory needs
- Sensory bags featuring noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and communication aids
- Certified sensory-inclusive venues, ranging from NFL stadiums to museums
KultureCity has pioneered several sensory-friendly spaces in Birmingham, including:
- The Tamika Hall Sensory Room at the Boutwell Auditorium, the venue’s first sensory room that’s equipped with a Moble Sensory Station.
- Multiple sensory rooms at the BJCC and Protective Stadium
- Quiet zones, sensory bags and trained staff at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater through a partnership between Live Nation and KultureCity.
