Located just east of downtown Birmingham, the historic neighborhood of Woodlawn has experienced a renaissance over the past few years. With dozens of new openings—including coffee shops, cocktail bars, event venues, restaurants and boutiques—and community events like the annual Woodlawn Sunday Dinner, Woodlawn has become a vibrant, growing neighborhood full of possibilities.

To help create a vibrant and sustainable neighborhood, local nonprofit Woodlawn United has teamed up with community partners to create several sets of high-quality, affordable homes. In fact, Woodlawn United and Navigate Affordable Housing Partners broke ground on a new set of affordable homes in Woodlawn in July.

Last week, Woodlawn United and partners broke ground on a new affordable housing development dubbed The Cottages on Georgia Road. Located at 200 61st St. S, The Cottages on Georgia Road are designed to provide high-quality, affordable homes designed to support families and strengthen the fabric of the neighborhood.

“This groundbreaking represents more than the start of construction—it’s the beginning of new possibilities for families in Woodlawn. We are deeply grateful to our partners who share our vision of creating thriving, connected communities.”

Mashonda S. Taylor, President & CEO, Woodlawn United.

The project represents a collaborative effort between several local organizations and community partners, including:

  • Woodlawn United
  • Navigate Affordable Housing Partners
  • Syms Contractors
  • Dynamic Civil Solutions
  • Alabama Housing Finance Authority
  • SouthState Bank
  • CCR Architecture & Interiors
  • Housing Authority of the Birmingham District
  • City of Birmingham
  • Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham
