Proposed license plate coming to Alabama in 2025—here’s what to know
Reading time: 2 minutes

If you’re due for a tag renewal soon or just like to keep up with what’s rolling onto Alabama’s roads, there are new license plates and design updates, according to a memo from the Alabama Department of Revenue.
New license plates are hitting Birmingham streets
Starting August 1, drivers can choose from a couple of brand-new specialty tags:
- PTSD Awareness
- Saraland City Schools
These plates join the long list of specialty tags that raise awareness and support local organizations. A shipment of prenumbered tags is already in motion, based on pre-commitments in each county.
Also rolling out August 1: updated designs for these existing tags:
- Louisiana State University
- Wallace State Community College
In addition, several popular plates are keeping their designs but will now be issued without a decal pocket. These include:
- AG Tag
- Donate Life Alabama
- Save the Cahaba
- Prostate Cancer Research
- Realtor
- Freshwater Fishing
- Sons of Confederate Veterans
- + more
One to watch: Alabama’s first wildlife rescue tag

A proposed specialty plate from the Alabama Wildlife Center—called “Protect Wildlife”—is aiming to become the state’s first tag supporting injured and orphaned animals. If 1,000 people pre-register by May 1, 2026, the tag goes into production. Each plate generates $41.25 to help fund rescue, rehab and conservation efforts across Alabama.
