So, you’ve probably heard that Costco is opening a second location in Birmingham soon.
The popular membership warehouse recently announced that they chose Irondale to house their new home, and they’re not alone: This $105 million investment is just one of the new businesses setting up shop within Irondale’s city limits.
Working closely with Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr, the big box store chose to do their business in Irondale because it’s a convenient location, the city made the process easy and enticing and it’s an area that’s quickly on the rise in the Greater Birmingham metro.
Since Costco isn’t the only one making moves to Irondale, we decided to take a closer look at what’s driving these businesses to the city.
Irondale is convenient

Nestled in the lush foothills (if you haven’t yet visited Ruffner Mountain in its backyard, what are you waiting for?) between interstates 20 and 459, Irondale provides proximity to downtown Birmingham while offering a calm, quiet sense of community.
But businesses are also loving Irondale’s convenient location.
“We’ve been in business since 1958 and were located in Woodlawn until last year. We chose to move to Irondale because it is safe, convenient to the interstate and we heard Irondale was pro-business.
Everyone at the City has been very welcoming, and we love being here.”
Joseph Braswell, Owner, Guin Service
Irondale boasts:
- 18 miles of interstate running through it
- proximity to 6 interstate exchanges
- the fact that it’s a major railway hub
- …and it’s less than a 10-minute drive from the Birmingham airport!
