34 reasons why we love flying from BHM as our home airport

We don’t typically use the words “travel” and “easy” or “fun” in the same sentence, but hear us out: Flying to and from our home airport of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport might just be worthy of both of those honors.
Not only can you easily—and directly!—reach 19 nonstop cities from BHM, you can do so while enjoying art that honors our city, convenient parking options and special features that ensure you arrive relaxed and ready to explore.
Here’s why you can skip that five-plus hour roundtrip drive to other airports and make BHM your home base.
1-19: Nonstop destinations from your doorstep

That’s right: 19 cities are only one flight away from BHM. That means you’re just one connection from hundreds of other domestic and international destinations, too.
Nonstop cities served out of BHM include:
- Atlanta
- Baltimore
- Charlotte
- Chicago
- Dallas/Ft. Worth
- Denver
- Detroit
- Ft. Lauderdale
- Houston
- Las Vegas
- Miami
- Nashville
- New York City
- Newark
- Orlando
- Philadelphia
- Phoenix
- Tampa
- Washington, D.C.
Not seeing your favorite destination on the list? The more we travel out of BHM, the more flights are likely added!
20. Park like a VIP

Parking at some major airports can be (what feels like) half of your journey…and not the fun half. We love that at BHM, you have so many options to fit your budget, time and needs:
- Valet all day: Did you know the valet option is only $3 more per day than the daily rate? You’ll want to book a reservation ahead of time.
- Time to the length of your trip: Daily and hourly deck sections are just a few quick steps from the terminal unlike other airports.
- Save on your space: Balling on a budget? The economy lot is the way to go with an included 24/7 shuttle. Rates are still just $10/day.
Look for new parking technology coming in the next year to make it quicker and easier to park and fly from BHM!
21-29. Art takes flight at BHM

BHM makes a great first impression on travelers, with intentional homages to Birmingham’s history, how the city is evolving and the welcoming vibe it aims to present today. We counted at least 9 permanent and rotating installations.
We love the living plant wall, with more than 8,000 live plants contributing a sense of calm to passing travelers.
Exhibits chronicling the Tuskegee Airmen, the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth (namesake of the airport) and the Birmingham Civil Rights movement add a somber, anchoring context that remind us of those who have made an important impact on our city and state.
30-32. Convenient features + local flavors

If you’ve ever had to struggle for plug access to charge your device pre-flight, you know what a big deal it is that BHM offers power plugs at every seat.
They’ve also kept your hydration goals in mind, so you’ll find water bottle-filling stations throughout the terminal, too.
And if you’re longing for one last taste of home before you depart the Magic City, you can enjoy locally-inspired bites, sip on a spirit from Birmingham’s own Redmont Distilling or even take some bbq to go.
33-34. Pets + sounds

At different times of the year, BHM brings in local performers. On the day we visited, Alabama native Anthony Crutch was soulfully serenading passers-by.

And, last but not least: They have dogs! We love the TLC—that stands for Traveler Loving Canines—dogs and their volunteers that pause for pats to soothe travel anxiety and stress.
