Popular locally-owned Tex-Mex restaurant closes near UAB

Birmingham-based Taco Mama has closed its UAB location on 7th Avenue South.

The popular Birmingham-based Tex-Mex restaurant chain posted a note about its departure at the entrance of the establishment, at 707 Richard Arrington Blvd. South, Suite 103. Taco Mama resided at the spot for eight years.

Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

“This is not a decision we make lightly. Our hearts are full of gratitude for our incredible team and guests who have made this place so special.

While this location is saying goodbye, we can’t wait to welcome you into our other Birmingham locations to keep the good times rolling.”

Eight Taco Mama restaurants remain in the Birmingham metro area. There is also one location in Tuscaloosa.

New Japanese eatery

On a brighter side, two doors down from the Taco Mama location, a new Japanese eatery called Otsuka Ramen opened last week. The spot specializes in ramen, hibachi, sushi and more.
