If you’re anything like me, deciding to live in Birmingham was a no-brainer. From top-notch restaurants and local gems to a friendly community that feels like family, it’s hard to imagine calling anywhere else home.
And for a few Birmingham newcomers (to real estate, that is), it’s that same feeling that inspired them to dive headfirst into helping others plant roots here, too.
We caught up with four of Ray & Poynor’s newest agents to learn more about their journey into real estate and what they’re loving about life in The Magic City right now.
From teaching to home tours

If you’d told Michelle Wagley a few years ago that she’d be trading her whiteboard for a home-showing schedule, she might not have believed you. But after 25 years of teaching and a handful of cross-country moves with her husband, the idea of helping people find their next chapter started to take root.
“I loved the process every time we moved. Each home felt like a new beginning. I realized I wanted to help other people feel that same excitement.”

Now based in Hoover, Michelle is discovering new digs in the city she’s long called home, from the growing shops at Knox Square to concerts at the new Coca-Cola Amphitheater, just a quick drive downtown.
As a longtime educator, she still thrives on guiding people through big decisions—just in a different setting.
“My favorite part is watching people light up when they find ‘the one.’ Buying a home is such a personal thing, and I love being part of that journey.”

Last-minute pivot from business to real estate

If Emma Kathryn Brint looks familiar, it might be because we first met her back in 2024 when she was still a student at The University of Alabama, interning in Birmingham. At the time, she had just made a last-minute career pivot from business to real estate—a leap that quickly turned into a passion.
A Birmingham native, Emma Kathryn says growing up here has been the best possible training ground for real estate. She loves seeing familiar faces everywhere, from Saturday mornings at The Market at Pepper Place to walks on Jemison Trail or grabbing coffee at O’Henry’s.
Her favorite part so far? Working with young couples or families buying their first home.
“It’s so sweet to see people begin their families while planning for marriage, kids and their forever home. I love being a part of this process! It can be emotional and exciting all at the same time, but helping people find the right fit is so much fun.”

From Rhode Island to Alabama

Although Sarah Bailey is originally from Rhode Island, she knows Birmingham like the back of her hand.
Her beginnings in The Magic City go back to the ’90s, when Sarah worked as a hostess at Arman’s at Park Lane (major throwback!) in English Village—fittingly, the very neighborhood where she now works as a real estate agent.
According to Sarah, what she loves most about her role is how personal and emotional it can be to connect with families.
“I’ve always loved connecting with people: building relationships, working through challenges and helping make decisions. In real estate, you’re not just helping buy or sell a house—you’re guiding them through a major transition.
Your home is a place where you live your life and make your memories, so it’s rewarding and humbling to be part of those moments.”

College student with a knack for real estate

Leah Henderlong may be new to real estate, but her passion for building community has been years in the making.
Between supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities through her work with Alpha Delta Pi at Samford or helping organize ONE College Night, Leah has always believed in the power of connection.
“I’ve always been drawn to the idea of making meaningful connections and being part of such an important chapter in someone’s life. Real estate isn’t just about houses, it’s about creating space for people to thrive.”

Meet Birmingham’s new generation of neighbors

What ties these three together is a shared belief in what makes Birmingham special: the people.
They’re not just selling houses; they’re becoming part of the stories that shape neighborhoods.
So next time you’re out grabbing coffee, wandering the farmers’ market or catching a show, don’t be surprised if you bump into one of them.
Buying, selling or seeking expert advice? Ray & Poynor can help.
