Is your child thriving at school?
If the answer is no—or even “not really”—you’re not alone. For many students, traditional school settings don’t meet their needs. That’s where Magic City Acceptance Academy (MCAA) comes in.
Located in Birmingham, MCAA serves students in grades 6–12 and offers an environment where students are supported academically, emotionally and socially. With enrollment open now for the 2025–2026 school year, we spoke with Principal Patton Furman about what makes this public charter school different, and why families from across Alabama are making the switch.
Built to support all types of learning

Whether it’s due to learning style, environment or life circumstances, some kids just need a different kind of support.
“We are a place where students who have struggled in traditional schools are able to thrive. Maybe they’ve been homeschooled. Maybe they’ve been disconnected from school entirely. We’re here with open arms to support them.”

At MCAA, students aren’t expected to conform to one-size-fits-all rules. The school builds relationships first, with small class sizes, hands-on teaching and an intentional focus on mental health, equity and personal growth.
MCAA’s mental health team includes five professionals—an impressive ratio for a school of around 350 students. Daily check-ins and ongoing support help students manage stress and develop healthy coping skills.
Meeting students where they are, academically + emotionally

Through a college and career readiness focus, students can graduate not only with a diploma, but with real-world experience.
Dual enrollment options allow high schoolers to earn college credit, and career-focused programs connect students to jobs with good pay and benefits.
“We had a graduate last year who left our school with not only a job that paid $25 an hour with full benefits, but also got them free college classes through our college and career program. We are not only helping them get through school and giving them the support that they need, but we’re providing that support after they walk out the door.”

Academics with agency

At its core, MCAA is about education—and they do things a little differently there, too.
Yes, students learn math, science, English and history. But it’s taught in a way that sparks curiosity and relevance, with student voice at the center.
“They have a voice and they have some autonomy in what happens in the classroom, while teaching what we have to teach, so that they are more engaged. That way, they’re much more likely to build curiosity in whatever the content is.
The most important thing to me: Is your is your child thriving? If not, we’re an option that has worked for a lot of kids.”
