When someone tells you they work at Children’s of Alabama, you might think of a doctor or a nurse. But did you know that Children’s of Alabama has hundreds of different job opportunities—including painters, mechanics and dental assistants?
To learn a little more about these out-of-the-box hospital careers, we spoke to a chaplain, a maintenance mechanic and an event planner. Here’s the scoop!
Joel Russell, Maintenance Mechanic, Staff Specialist

For nearly four years, Joel Russell has been Children’s of Alabama’s go-to for repairs to any mechanical and structural equipment.
He came in as a Maintenance Mechanic, but was recently promoted to a Staff Specialist! In this role, Joel encourages his coworkers to take pride in what they do, and that’s exactly what he mirrors.
Before joining the Children’s team, Joel was a Boiler Technician in the Navy and at UAB—so he loves to provide preventive maintenance and look out for any potential problems.
Joel’s ‘why’ for working at Children’s of Alabama: “My Faith has guided me to be where I needed to be, rather than where I wanted to be at times. I really enjoy what I do here at Children’s of Alabama.”

Curt Posey, Director of the Bradley Lecture Center

Children’s of Alabama’s Bradley Lecture Center boasts 6,000 square feet of meeting space and overlooks the Birmingham skyline, and Curt Posey is at the wheel.
Curt is no stranger to the media scene—coming from a television background, he saw an opportunity with audiovisual and event management at Children’s.
He’s been at Children’s for 19 years, but three months ago, he was promoted to a director position, where he manages events ranging from quick meetings to regional conferences.
Fun fact: Children’s hosts an average of 3,000 events per year, and have welcomed guests like Alabama football players and a U.S. Supreme Court justice.
Curt’s favorite part of his job: “I enjoy the logistics of managing events and meeting the variety of people who come through our facility.”
Kenneth Coleman, Chaplain

After retiring from his career as a Radiation Therapist at the University of Chicago, Kenneth Coleman kept a promise to his wife to move South.
The couple made their home in Birmingham, and Kenneth has been a Chaplain at Children’s of Alabama for nearly three years.
He mainly works on the weekends, but his impact through Chaplaincy stretches far and wide across the hospital.
Children’s is not a faith-based organization, so chaplains provide support and resources to families from an interfaith perspective.
What Kenneth loves about his team: “Our team stands tall with compassion as our compass. We often feel the pain of encounters we walk into, so as a result, we engage in activities to counterbalance the stress.”
