Birmingham Metro jobless numbers continue to stay well below U.S. rate

The Birmingham Metro Area’s June 2025 unemployment rate continues to stay well below the national rate.

According to the Alabama Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for the seven-county Birmingham Metro area stood 2.8% compared to 4.1% for the United States.

Here is how each county in the metro area fared in June:

  • Bibb — 3.0%
  • Blount — 2.5%
  • Chilton — 2.8%
  • Jefferson — 3.1%
  • Shelby — 2.4%
  • St. Clair — 2.5%
  • Walker — 3.0%

The state unemployment rate was slightly higher at 3.2%.

Local Birmingham June jobless rates

The jobless numbers were more varied on the municipal level with Bessemer coming in with a high of 4.2% to Vestavia Hills at 2.1%.

Here is how selected cities did in June.

  • Birmingham — 3.8%
  • Homewood — 2.2%
  • Hoover — 2.3%
  • Pelham — 2.2%

Birmingham saw the biggest month to month increase in the jobless rate going from 3.4% in May to 3.8% in June.
