The Alabama Wildlife Center (AWC) has announced that the 2025 Birmingham Nature Fest, originally scheduled for July 10-13 at Oak Mountain State Park, has been canceled.

The reason? A major HVAC failure that’s affecting all of AWC’s public spaces, including the Bird Feeding Observatory, reptile room and more.

Read on for how you can help during this critical time.

Alabama Wildlife Center faces costly cooling crisis

In an Instagram post on July 1, AWC shared the news that their one-of-a-kind Birmingham Nature Fest has been canceled, stating:

“A major HVAC unit that cools our public spaces—including the reptile room, intake area, education room, and bird feeding observatory—has completely failed. Without air conditioning, we simply cannot safely and comfortably host visitors, staff, or wildlife indoors during Alabama’s hottest months.”

We know—it’s disappointing. Not only will this impact upcoming community events, but it also brings a heavy, unexpected cost: a $30,000 replacement for the 40+ year-old HVAC system.

While the Birmingham Nature Fest may be canceled, but you can still make a difference.

AWC has launched an urgent fundraising campaign to raise $15,000 by August 31—half of the total cost of a new HVAC—to help restore climate control in their public spaces for wildlife, visitors and future programming.

Every dollar makes a difference. Donate now.
